Parent Participation in Treatment
Why Parent Participation Matters
Children spend approximately one hour per week with their therapist and many more hours each week with their parents or caregivers. Because parents have the greatest influence on a child's daily environment, meaningful and lasting change often occurs most effectively when parents are actively involved in the therapeutic process.
For this reason, treatment at WholeHeart Counseling & Play Therapy includes both child therapy sessions and parent consultation/training sessions.
While your child will meet individually with the therapist to develop emotional awareness, coping skills, and healing experiences through play therapy, parents will learn practical tools and strategies to support those same goals at home. This collaborative approach helps create consistency between the therapy room and the child's everyday environment.
What to Expect During the First Eight Weeks
During the first eight weeks of treatment:
- Your child will attend weekly therapy sessions.
- It is recommended that parents or primary caregivers attend weekly or biweekly parent consultation/training sessions on a separate day from the child's session.
- Parent sessions may be conducted in person or via telehealth when appropriate.
The first eight weeks are especially important because they allow parents to:
- Better understand their child's emotional and behavioral needs
- Learn how to respond effectively to difficult behaviors
- Strengthen attachment and connection with their child
- Identify patterns that may be unintentionally maintaining problems
- Develop skills that support the work occurring in therapy
- Create a home environment that promotes healing and growth
Parents often report that these sessions help them feel more confident, less overwhelmed, and more equipped to support their child's progress.
Topics Covered in Parent Training
Parent consultation sessions may include:
- Child development and emotional needs
- Attachment and connection
- Effective discipline and behavior management
- Emotional regulation
- Parenting strategies and practical tools
- Healthy boundaries
- Understanding behavior through a needs-based lens
- Reducing shame and increasing connection
- Family relationship patterns
- Exploring how a parent's own experiences may influence current parenting responses
The goal is not to assign blame or criticize parenting. Rather, the goal is to provide support, education, insight, and practical tools that strengthen the parent-child relationship.
Ongoing Parent Consultation
After the initial eight-week period, parent participation will continue to be an important part of treatment.
Parents will generally be asked to participate in parent consultation sessions every four to six weeks, or more frequently if clinically indicated.
These ongoing consultations allow the therapist and caregivers to:
- Review progress toward treatment goals
- Discuss challenges that arise at home
- Adjust parenting strategies as needed
- Monitor treatment effectiveness
- Ensure consistency between therapy and home environments
- Support continued growth and maintenance of progress
Additional parent sessions may be recommended when significant concerns arise or when additional support would benefit the child and family.
Our Treatment Philosophy
At WholeHeart Counseling & Play Therapy, we believe children heal and grow most effectively when the important adults in their lives are actively involved in the process. Therapy is not something that happens only in the therapy room; it is a partnership between the child, parents, and therapist.
By investing time in both your child's therapy and your own learning and growth as a parent, you are helping create the conditions for deeper healing, stronger relationships, and lasting positive change.
